With an RPG component, the game offers you a narrative story and an in-depth investigation into a tragic event that set the vampire society of the city of Boston in motion. Find in this guide our best tips and tricks to get off to a good start in this Big Bad Wolf adventure.
- 1 – An already established universe
- 2 – Plenty of choices
- 3 – Verbal fights, will and thirst
- 4 – Confrontations
- 5 – The character sheet and experience
1 – An already established universe
The game launches you directly into the universe of Vampire: The Masquerade and the characters will be quick to explain the specific terms used. Although this allows coherent dialogues, neophytes can quickly find themselves lost. What is an infant, a chalice or even the Primogen, the Camarilla and the Anarchs? Do not hesitate to take a look in the Codex which fills up as you progress. You will find a lot of useful, but not mandatory, information on the lore and the characters in order to immerse yourself more easily in this narrative adventure.
2 – Plenty of choices
You will face many situations where you will have to make choices. It is impossible to do everything in one game and you will have to restart the different scenes in order to discover the multiple paths of the game. It can be a simple decision between two possibilities that can impact the sequel. But most importantly, you will have to choose in most interactions whether or not you want to spend your blood and your will, valuable resources that will certainly be useful to you later. Is putting an adversary in his place more important to you than unraveling the mystery of a hidden and locked chest? Managing your resources is important and we discuss this subject just below.
3 – Verbal fights, will and thirst
The fights in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong take place in the form of dialogues. Your characters have skills and attributes. They pit them against their opponents in order to achieve victory. If your level is too low compared to your opponent, you can focus on increasing the desired skill by up to three points, requiring willpower. Be careful, your interlocutor can also do the same thing. You can see the chance percentage below the dialog. If it is too high, sometimes it may be wiser not to give it a shot and keep your Will for easier action later.
You regain willpower by winning dialogues, using pickable objects in the different scenes or by starting a new one.
The same goes for the Disciplines. They are linked to the clan to which the character you are playing belongs. Using them, in dialogue or in exploration, increases your bloodlust level. You will need to drink from a human to quench your thirst. Avoid killing them, you would increase your suspicion scoregranting you skill penalties during dialogues.
4 – Confrontations
Showdowns are kind of like bosses in the game. These are dialogues in several stages. The number of errors allowed is then indicated. If you make too many mistakes, the confrontation is lost and the story continues to advance taking into account your defeat.
Although completing stages with skills ensures a victory point in the confrontation, you can also get away with simple lines of dialogue. Knowing a little about your interlocutor can allow you to make the right choices. What does he want, how does he react to provocation, etc?
You don’t have to try to win every stage, unless you’re only allowed one mistake. If the use of Willpower is too high and unlikely to succeed, prefer to pass your turn and keep your will on this round to better counter-attack later.
Winning confrontations often brings great rewards as objects or lines which will be useful to your character for this scene, or even the whole game.
5 – The character sheet and experience
Let’s talk about the character sheet and experience gain. We can’t tell you exactly how well it works, but it looks like each successful secondary or main interaction gives you XP to distribute at the start of the next scene with this same character. You can see what you succeeded or failed at the end of the scene on the summary screen.
There are three ways to spend this experience:
- Attributes : Improving your attributes increases your chances of success in the event of a tie during a dialogue with a skill linked to it.
- Skills : You will be able to use skills with almost every interaction, whether in dialogue or exploration. In the case of the latter, concentration cannot be used and you will need a minimum level to activate the interaction.
- Disciplines : As mentioned above, they are linked to your character’s clan. Putting points in it is relatively expensive but the bonuses they bring and the interactions they unlock are very interesting. Don’t put them aside for too long.
Also remember to take a look at your Talents. These are unlocked as you perform certain actions such as drinking without killing, passing persuasion tests, etc. The more you do, the more you advance towards the different levels which unlock very useful bonuses for your adventure.
