Game News Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: The end of an era for Nintendo’s fighting game?
While the game got its last major update last October, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to be active with its ever-motivated competitive scene. Still, the game’s creator, Masahiro Sakurai, has just announced the end of a beloved fan tradition.

Released in 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is today the third best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe of course. With more than 27.4 million copies sold, we remind you that this is a two-dimensional fighting game that brings together all the characters of Nintendo within the same title so that they compete. Started on Nintendo 64, each Nintendo home console has since been entitled to its Super Smash Bros.
But since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the crossover extends to other major video game franchises like Sonic or Metal Gear Solid. With Ultimate, these collaborations with other major licenses have multiplied so much that the title has become almost a video game encyclopedia.. This is all the more the case thanks to the many DLCs that followed the release of the game, first with Joker from Persona 5 before Sora, the hero of Kingdom Hearts, came to conclude the ball.
The end of a great tradition!
Obviously, since the release of the last character last October, the news around Nintendo’s crossover has calmed down a lot, for lack of major novelties. However, Masahiro Sakurai, director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and face of the saga, shared news on Twitter which also marks the end of a certain era for the fighting game. If you follow the gentleman on Twitter, you are used to seeing the screenshots he posts very regularly. On these, there can be images that are particularly good in scenes from the game, with always funny or hyper-class poses that are difficult to achieve by yourself in-game.
Unfortunately, after years of getting into the habit of regularly posting these screenshots, Masahiro Sakurai has announced that he will no longer be able to post new images since he is coming to the end of those he captured during the game’s development. This tradition that the director had taken was a habit that made it possible to establish strong bonds with the players, especially since the latter had become the face of the series over the years. Thus, after the end of the regular arrival of new fighters, it is therefore a new page that turns for Super Smash Bros. which we are still waiting to know if a new game will take over or if Ultimate is truly the last episode of the series, as its name suggests.
Posting Smash Ultimate screenshots every day has been part of my work routine for quite a while now… but it seems I won’t have enough of them during August.
I took about 200 new screens as we finished developing the game, so it’s hard to believe they’ve all been released already. Time flies really fast!
