Renault Austral. The range and equipment in detail

Even if the prices of the Renault Austral SUV remain secret, the replacement for the Kadjar has already unveiled its entire range when opening its pre-orders. The argus takes stock of the finishes available, their standard equipment, the engines that can be associated with them and the main options.

At launch, the Renault Austral SUV range consists of three classic finishes and two Esprit Alpine versions.

For Renault, the arrival of a new compact SUV is one of the events of the year. With the Austral, the Losange hopes to experience more enthusiasm than with the Kadjar, quickly relegated to the role of extra by the second generation of Peugeot 3008. But the arrival in concessions of this family adventurer is not expected before the end of the year. Rather than opening orders early, the French brand therefore preferred to launch a pre-order system, more common on electric models. A configurator was set up simultaneously, which already makes it possible to discover the entire range of this Renault Austral, as well as its equipment.

Five finishes at launch, including two “Alpine Spirit”

The launch offer is very reminiscent of the Mégane E-Tech Electric, with only three “real” finishes: Equilibre, Techno and Iconic. Here, however, there is a major difference since the two upper levels inaugurate a brand new “Alpine Spirit” label. With, in this case, a slightly sportier look, characterized in particular by 20-inch black rims and an interior presentation in tune. In reality, therefore, the customer has rather the choice between five different versions. If he is satisfied with the entry-level Équilibre, he will not necessarily be too much to complain about. The standard equipment includes 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, a 9-inch touch screen with smartphone replication, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, hands-free access and starting, and rear parking assistance. As often, however, it will probably be better to turn to at least the second level, Techno, to facilitate resale. If the additional cost remains unknown, this finish does indeed add the large 12-inch screen with Google services, imitation leather-fabric upholstery and more rewarding 19-inch rims, but also more sophisticated lighting and parking assistance, not to mention the very practical sliding bench seat with folding seats from the boot. Note that the Techno Esprit Alpine variant theoretically loses this ability to slide its backrests, but it should be a mandatory check option on our market

Different types of hybridization on the menu

Renault Austral engines by finish

Engines available by trim level.

As usual, the choice of engines varies according to the level of finish. If four mechanics appear in the program from the start, only the Techno version really gives access to each of them. The Balance entry ticket must be content with the brand new 1.2 turbo-petrol 130 hp associated with a mechanical gearbox. A modest power which may raise fears of a little fair performance and a fairly high appetite in charge, despite the presence of a light hybridization in 48 V. Equipped with the same 1.2, but this time supported by a new version of the original transmission automatic with claws, the Austral full hybrid 160 promises to be both much faster and more sober. It will, in fact, be able to drive in 100% electric mode regularly. Too bad that only the Techno finish can benefit from it. The three upper levels favor a 200 hp version of the same full hybrid engine, which is necessarily more expensive. But the Techno Esprit Alpine and Iconic offer as a bonus a slightly cheaper and better known alternative, the four-cylinder 1.3 TCe 160 associated with the EDC dual-clutch gearbox. Attention, it is also this engine which has the lightest hybridization, with a 12 V system, and which will be the only one to be systematically penalized by the ecological malus. A tax which can reach 740 € in his case if you do not take delivery of your vehicle until 2023.

Plenty of options

But the choice of finish also has an impact on the options offered. As often, entry-level offers few possibilities to improve the ordinary: in addition to the spare wheel with a false boot floor, only two packs are available, one with the 12-inch touch screen, navigation and Google services, the other with the reversing camera, but also the front and side parking radars. The panoramic glass roof is part of a sunroof pack with the roof bars on Techno, while it is offered as a separate option on the other levels. The two Iconic versions are the only ones able to benefit from a head-up display, a heated windshield and Matrix LED headlights. As for the four-wheel steering, only the three Techno Esprit Alpine, Iconic and Iconic Esprit Alpine variants will be able to receive them, against a supplement probably close to €1,500. Unpublished on the segment, this technology borrowed from the big brother Espace promises on paper to give lessons in agility to the competition, Peugeot 3008 included.
