PlayStation Plus: 7 must-do retro games!

Game News PlayStation Plus: 7 must-do retro games!

As you already know, the new PlayStation Plus has just been launched with more than 700 games from all walks of life, whether recent or released years ago. Today, we are going to look at these nuggets of yesteryear that are still worth the detour. So fasten your seat belt, because we’re going to have a hell of a step back in time. Don’t worry, the quality is there!

Some images are from the original releases, not the remastered PS Plus releases.

Final Fantasy VII

Of course, you know Final Fantasy VII, Square Enix’s cult work which recently received a remake (and whose second episode will be released next year). So why not jump into the original game? With the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium offer, it is possible. Take advantage of a remastered version – much finer than at the time – with all the systems of yesteryear: turn-based combat, hand-drawn decorations… Why not after all, if you want to get into the skin of a gamer from the 90s. Especially since, since the Final Fantasy VII Remake was rewritten, you will discover here Cloud’s original story, Sephiroth, of the Avalanche group, and Shinra who wants to seize the life energy of the earth to run his business. A simply cult game for all RPG fans.

Jak & Daxter / Jak II / Jak X

So here we are tackling a big name in action-adventure / platform, developed by none other than one of the most famous studios in the world: Naughty Dog. Before making Uncharted, The Last of Us, the team was best known for their platform games. So, after the crazy success of Crash Bandicoot, it was Jak & Daxter’s turn to invade PS2s around the world. And as much to say that the series is remembered, with a tone that slowly became more mature as the episodes progressed. From now on, in the Premium offer of PlayStation Plus, you can discover Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II: Outlaw, Jak X (a not really memorable racing software). You will therefore have understood, the third opus is missing for the time being. But you have plenty to do and be surprised with the series. We download!

Ape Escape / Ape Escape 2

Another game, another cult title! Do you know Ape Escape, this little platform game where you have to catch monkeys? If not, know that it’s a hell of a piece of the PS1. It’s simply the first game to make the DualShock mandatory : the controller with two analog sticks (the basic one had only a directional cross). Players can thus move with the left stick and use an object with the right, especially a net to recover animals that wander everywhere. And to do nothing like everyone else, the jump key was also attached to the R1 and R2 triggers. In short, a small revolution for the time. So if you want to have a taste of it, the first episode as well as the second, Ape Escape 2, are available in the PlayStation Plus Premium offer. What a great time to have!

Toy Story II

While Buzz Lightyear has just had the right to his own film, how about embodying him in a game? Well, we will have to go back a few years, but it’s worth it. Here is Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, an action-adventure game that takes place in the famous Disney / Pixar universe. You know the song, in this second installment, Woodie got kidnapped and the great Space Ranger will do everything to find him ! You will have to embody it for 15 levels to accomplish your objective, all in five zones with bosses at the key. In short, an unpretentious platform game that does the job well, even with passages from the film and the original voices of the heroes. In addition, we can see here the nice remaster work done on the retro games of PlayStation Plus. All in all, there is no reason to deprive yourself at all.

resident Evil

So yes, Resident Evil 8 will land in virtual reality. Yes, a Resident Evil 4 remake is in development. Progress is all well and good, but the first Resident Evil was already damn successful. From now on, via PlayStation Plus Premium, you can experience a Director’s Cut version of this masterpiece, with the added bonus of new cinematics – new camera angles and additional scenes. Even more good reasons to shiver ! If you haven’t had the opportunity to play it, know that it’s a survival horror in the purest tradition of the term: fixed camera angles, doors that open slowly… Even today, we bet that you will not remain indifferent to the zombies of the Manor. The opportunity to know where it all began, where the Umbrella company began its experiments. A huge cult game.

tekken 2

Do you want to have a much more frontal approach than in Resident Evil? Then this good old Tekken 2 is for you! You must know this big name in the fighting game. This opus takes the basics of the first episode to make it something better, always with a four-button attack system. On the program, new counter-attacks as well as modes that will always be there later: Survival, Team Battle and Time Attack. It was enough to make Tekken 2 one of the most popular PlayStation 1 games. Moreover, for the anecdote, at the launch of the new PS Plus, the game displayed a price of $ 9,999 on the Sony store. An error certainly caused by the transition to the new subscription service. So yes, when we tell you that Tekken is worth gold, it’s not for nothing!

Siphon Filter

We finally end with a last big name of the PlayStation, also developed by a studio which today makes a lot of noise at Sony: Siphon Filter by Bend Studio (Days Gone). Here, nothing to do with hordes of zombies: it’s action-infiltration in the third person. But we are in a fairly realistic approach to the genre. The player has at his disposal a lot of gadgets that he must use well depending on the situation, and the enemies will not hesitate to hide behind objects to protect themselves. All in a story full of computer viruses but also terrorist networks. In short, a fairly modern game that still deserves attention today. So if you want to discover the first steps of Bend Studio, you know what you have to do. Siphon Filter is available in the Premium offer of the recent PlayStation Plus.
