Main Square Festival: Sting, a pleasant but flat best-of concert

The Englishman was the star of the second evening of the 16th Main Square Festival in Arras. Flanked by seven musicians, Sting gave a kind of concert-communion which brought together several generations. Quite effective. But for the magic, we will come back…

It’s hard to be hard on Sting. The English singer who performed this Friday evening at prime time on the Main Square main stage is attracting sympathy. At the age of 70, time does not seem to have any hold on her silhouette (thin, slender) or affect her good nature. The voice is still powerful and fair. It’s obvious: by distributing two huge hits from the start, Message in a Bottle (signed The Police) and Englishman in New Yorkthe Englishman is a sort of elegant pop shepherd, one of the last guardians of the rock temple.

He arrives in a canary yellow jacket under a declining sun, his eternal threadbare bass guitar slung over his shoulder. Behind him, the group of seven musicians unrolls him a millimetric sound carpet on which he only has to put his voice. With his micro-earphone, he looks like a conjurer on stage, quick to pull treasures out of his sleeve. Sting has it all! What directory. He draws from the hits of his first group (The Police), returns to more recent titles, often also known.

“A timeless artist”

It delights, the public asks for more: there are forties, fifties and more, but also young people. Like Yasmine, 23, who came from Cholet with a friend. Their first Main Square. ” He is a timeless artist who has crossed the ages she smiles. Stéphanie and Claudio, in their forties, haven’t lost a beat either. ” Sting, it’s emblematic, he has such a career behind himsaid Stephanie. We listen to it religiously, with respect. »

As deep as it is, a catalog of songs does not necessarily make for a good concert. Sting threads the pieces in a linear, professional tone. He makes the public sing when necessary without ever addressing himself to him. It’s clean but it lacks flesh, sweat. Roxanewhich he resumes as an encore alone on dry guitar, does not redeem the rest of the concert: the sounds of the Green Room show partly mask Sting’s last notes.
