New model, new platform, new segment: MG Motor is about to enter the 100% electric compact sedan segment with the all-new MG4 Electric.

It is the first MG model based on the new modular MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) developed by SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG. The particularly thin battery of the MG4 Electric is initially available in capacities ranging from 51 kWh to 64 kWh and allowing a range of up to 450 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. This new MG model will be launched in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2022 and is currently in its final phase of testing.

With the new MG4 Electric, based on the new MSP platform, the manufacturer MG is entering the compact segment, which is essential in Europe, and is positioning itself as the intelligent solution to the needs of motorists looking for an electric vehicle. With a length of 4,287 mm, a width of 1,836 mm and a height of 1,504 mm, this new model is positioned at the heart of its competitive environment. The MG4 Electric offers a comfortable and spacious cabin, with enough space for five people, while maintaining elegant and athletic proportions. In addition, its ideal weight distribution (50:50) allows for better handling and greater dynamism in bends. With a propulsion architecture, the new MG4 Electric provides excellent driving pleasure.

The low height of the car is made possible by its particularly flat battery. This is the thinnest battery developed by SAIC Motor with a height of only 110 mm, it is even the thinnest in its class. The MG4 Electric will initially be available with 51 kWh and 64 kWh batteries allowing a range of 350 and 450 kilometers respectively according to the WLTP cycle.

Other variants of the MG4 Electric will be planned, including a version equipped with all-wheel drive. For the larger battery, the electric motor transmits a maximum power of 150 kW (204 hp) to the rear axle. The 51 kWh battery version develops 125 kW (170 hp). The MG4 Electric accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds, while the top speed is set at 160 km/h.

European premiere for the new MSP platform

The MG4 Electric is currently undergoing its last endurance tests with more than 120,000 kilometers covered in various conditions on the old continent. It is the first MG model for Europe to be based on the new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) dedicated to electric vehicles and developed by parent company SAIC Motor. This modular architecture offers many advantages in terms of flexibility, space optimization, safety, driving experience, weight saving and advanced technologies. Its design is suitable for wheelbases ranging from 2,650 to 3,100 mm, which makes it possible to design different body styles for different segments on the same platform. This new modular platform therefore plays an important role in MG’s growth strategy in Europe.

ONE-PACK battery

The “ONE PACK” is an innovative design battery dedicated to the MSP platform. Thanks to the lying arrangement of the battery elements, the minimum height of the battery can reach a record value of 110 mm, greatly improving space utilization. Combined with the new design of the cooling system, the “ONE PACK” battery offers three major advantages: ultra-high integration, ultra-long life and “zero thermal runaway” safety.

Benefiting from the “ONE PACK” battery, the new MG4 Electric has an edge over its class in terms of interior space, weight and safety. Thanks to its new architecture dedicated to electrics, the MG4 offers more interior space within the same exterior dimensions. The engineers have also succeeded in significantly reducing the weight of the vehicle, which is extremely beneficial for fuel efficiency and driving pleasure.

Ready for future technologies

The MSP platform and its associated components are also ready for the implementation of future advanced technologies. For example, the system voltage of the electronic drive unit, which includes 8-layer hairpin technology and a special oil cooling system, can be increased from 400 to 800 V to charge the battery. even faster in the future. In addition, the powertrain is capable of supporting future BaaS (Battery as a Service) battery swap systems. The integrated service-oriented architecture (SOA) allows vehicles to receive updates remotely (over-the-air, OTA) throughout their lifecycle. Finally, the platform is equipped with a complete swarm environment mapping system (PP CEM), necessary for advanced autonomous driving solutions.
